Therapeutic Design

As a leader in architectural design for residents with Alzheimer’s, Irwin Partners Architects designed memory boxes based on long term memory care research.

Memory boxes have been incorporated in the interior of several Alzheimer’s/Memory Support facilities. These boxes display residents’ memorabilia, and are located outside of each bedroom.

Examples of projects that incorporated Memory Boxes into their Alzheimer’s/Memory Support facilities:

NAHB “Best of Senior’s Housing Award” for Southwoods Lodge, Hillcrest Retirement Community 1998.

“The memory boxes enable residents to display their life stories and it encourages them to repeat the stories to visitors, staff and other residents. The memory boxes create an opportunity to maintain and exercise remaining mental abilities and social skills as well as reinforce a link to that individual’s identity.”
